Analog == Analog? and if yes: Whats the point of "firmware"?

Hi Im a relative beginner and playing around with a TD-3, the Edge and a Korg Volca Drum. Looking for a Neutron because I have fun with patching around with the Edge and want more playground and feel attracted by the analog synth world!

There is a question that maybe does not make sense, but really dont understand: When a synth is analog, e.g. the Neutron, than why there is any firmware? And what can be updated? I thought the point of analog is, that there is no such thing as computers or programs and everything is purely electronics. I hope somebody can explain this to me.
