Modifying wheel clutch paddle to work as shifter?

Due to some hand problems, i've been looking for ways to both upshift and downshift using only my left hand. I'm currently using a Moza R5 and looking for a new wheel shows all with 4 regular paddles are $550+ which gave me the idea of modifying the clutch on a normal wheel such as a Simagic GT Neo to shorten its travel and snap back with magnets. I haven't found anyone else doing anything similar and I was wondering if any of you have done this before or had ideas on how to do it.
