AITA for getting frustrated with my girlfriend after she got upset over me “leaving her on read” for 5 minutes?
So this has been bugging me all day, and I want to know if I’m actually in the wrong here or if she’s just blowing things out of proportion.
This morning, I texted my girlfriend a long, sweet good morning message — genuinely trying to make her day start off nice. Later, we were texting normally, but out of nowhere, she got upset because my location had paused on Life360. I explained that it happens sometimes (it switches to “While Using” out of no where, it has literally even happened while we were together) and I fixed it right away, but she started acting dry and short with me after that.
Then, when I tried to keep the convo light — showing her how close we were to each other on the map on Life360 and even sending funny stickers — she just kept responding with one-word replies like “ok” and “um.” When I asked what was wrong, she said I was being “annoying” because I didn’t respond to one of her earlier comments. Like… it wasn’t even a question it was just a statement. She said it’s “annoying” that I act like she’s not responding when she is. I told her I didn’t mean anything by it — I was just confused because she was being dry — but she took it way further than it needed to go.
Then later, when I texted her again while I was out with my mom, I didn’t respond for maybe five minutes because I was talking to her I had put my phone in my pocket after texting her but left it open so it said read. My girlfriend suddenly got passive-aggressive, saying I “gave her four minutes to respond before saying something ( I waited close to 40 minutes, which I don’t even mind it’s just she makes it such a big thing to keep each other informed if we can’t respond which she didn’t)” earlier and that I leave her on read while she only leaves me on delivered. She said she’d “just talk later,” so I apologized and explained I might’ve accidentally left her on read because I put my phone in my pocket. I even said sorry again and told her I’d be more careful.
Instead of dropping it, she got even snappier — saying “clearly you cannot,” “so bye,” and “thank God,” when I said I’d just text later then and just generally being rude and dismissive. Every time I tried to calmly explain or fix it, she’d act like I was overreacting or “acting like she was talking to a robot.”
I genuinely don’t understand how a 5-minute delay or a minor miscommunication turned into her being cold and sarcastic afterwards. I apologized multiple times and kept trying to make things right, but she kept throwing little jabs or saying “read” and “bye.”
So, AITA for being frustrated and calling her out for how she was acting? I feel like I was just trying to talk things through and she turned it into a bigger deal than it ever needed to be. And then sees nothing wrong and thinks that it’s my fault
