When Can I Stop Blood Thinners? Young Male with a PE.
I (27Male) was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism about a month and a half ago. I noticed something was wrong when I woke up one morning and randomly had back pain deep in my middle/left back every time I took a breath in. The pain got worse throughout the day. I went to take a shower that evening and needed to cough up phlegm and noticed there was blood.
Right then and there, I noticed something was severely wrong. I couldn’t sleep that night due to pain and ended up driving myself to the hospital early in the morning. After testing, doctors determined that I had a small PE in my lung. I was in immense pain for about 3/4 days and was prescribed Eloquis. I was coughing up blood the whole time. About 2 weeks into taking my blood thinners, the blood coughing up was gone and I felt AMAZING.
I think the reason I had a blood clot was because I was vaping morning, noon and night. From the moment I woke up, to the moment I went to bed. That’s the only cause I can think of. No family history or anything else. The kicker is I’m a very active man. I play basketball full court 2-3 times a week and lift weights 2 times a week at least. I do not take any supplements or anything.
Since my diagnosis, I haven’t vaped at all and stayed consistent with my blood thinners. I feel incredible, arguably better than before my PE. There were no signs leading up to my PE at all except for the day that I coughed up blood and was in pain.
I talked to someone older who was on blood thinners to gauge sentiment and their thoughts on my progress. They claimed that the doctors and medical industry are going to want to keep me on them for as long as they can for money, essentially. This person was someone who smoked cigarettes since they were 15 and were now in their late 50s, with a plethora of other health and lung issues that nearly killed them. They claimed they were on blood thinners for about 5-6 months before just deciding to get off and they have been completely fine since, even with smoking cigarettes again.
I haven’t touched or thought of a vape since my diagnosis and do not plan to. I haven’t been actively exercising, staying on my feet and playing basketball by myself as to not get injured and suffer from internal bleeding from an injury. I’m getting quite fed up with feeling great and not being able to play the sport I want to play for optimal exercise and cardio.
TLDR: Ive only been on blood thinners for over a month and feel incredible, way better than before vaping. My lungs feel good and everything else is in order. I’ve heard mixed reviews from doctors online and my own doctor who didn’t give a definitive timeline, but said I’m doing “well”. When can I get off them? Would I be fine if I got off them and never vaped again and continued exercising? Would another PE develop even if my lungs are cleaned out and I’m exercising as well as being young (27)?
Any advice or input is greatly appreciated! I really just want to get back to living my normal life because I truly feel normal or if not, better than before!
