Cat Mystery Illness

Hi everyone!
We’ve visited multiple vets several times, but they still can’t identify the cause of my cat’s ongoing issue. I wanted to see if anyone has had a similar experience or can spot something the vets may have missed. It's a lot of information, so I tried to format it in an easier-to-read way.

My cat and I moved to China in February. He’s a male domestic shorthair, middle-aged (exact age unknown — adopted from a shelter with only 4 teeth). His weight has gone from 7 kg to about 6.8 kg.

Timeline

Mid-April: He began vomiting frequently (3–4 times a week) but was eating, drinking, and using the litter box normally.

  • Vet #1: Bloodwork and ultrasound looked mostly normal, except for a slightly thickened stomach lining and slow large intestine movement. Diagnosed with gastroenteritis and given medication. He improved briefly, but the vomiting returned.
  • By late May, they advised switching to Royal Canin GI food but continued blaming the stomach lining. No long-term improvement, so we switched vets.

Vet #2:

  • New ultrasound and bloodwork showed one kidney at 60% function, the other normal. Mild GI dysfunction with excess gas.
  • Calcium and potassium were slightly elevated with no clear cause. Recommended 1g chia seeds daily for calcium and slight weight loss.
  • After adjusting food portions, vomiting stopped — problem solved for a while.

Current Issue (Since Early September)

Now he has reduced appetite.

  • Refuses dry food (always disliked wet food). Still interested in snacks (Churu, freeze-dried treats) but sometimes even ignores those.
  • He’ll sniff his dry food, seem interested, then walk away.
  • Vet prescribed a probiotic and appetite stimulant (every other day) — this helped temporarily, but his appetite is now around 60% of normal.
  • He still drinks, pees, and poops normally and only vomits occasionally.

Additional Info

  • Environmental factors ruled out: changed litter, detergents, cleaning supplies, opened windows for ventilation.
  • Discontinued Minoxidil hair oil immediately after learning it’s toxic to cats and cleaned everything it contacted.
  • Bloodwork and ultrasound continue to show no direct cause.

We’re lost — he seems fine in most areas but still won’t eat properly. Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated.
