Asus ET8 aimesh nonsense...

One of my Asus ET8 refuses to use the ethernet port as the backhaul connection - it just keeps choosing 5Ghz, and then barely working. The port shows as green 1 GB connection. Any ideas? Asus support has been crazy terrible - "let's reset the entire aimesh and try again"...
