Trying to build something real in Dubai, but finding deals way harder than expected

General

Hey everyone,
I’m trying to build a small logistics and trade company here in Dubai. It’s a wild place to start because opportunities are huge, but getting people to actually sign on something real takes forever (especially when you have more of a financial and software background than a pure logistics background).

Right now I’m trying to figure out: how do people with limited networks and zero “big family name” actually get their first deal across the line?

It can't just be luck and/or nepotism...right?

I’ve been reading, talking to people, and trying to figure out how others negotiate, and it feels like there’s this hidden balance between pressure, timing, and just keeping the conversation alive.

So I’m asking:

  • How did you land your first real client or supplier deal without connections? (Regardless of the industry)
  • Did you cold email, meet people at events, or just keep showing up?
  • What made someone finally trust you enough to sign? (And vice versa, what do you look for before committing to a major deal)
  • Any small tactics that helped (payment terms, referrals, credibility signals)?

I’d love to hear real examples. I’ll compile the advice and share what worked for me as I go.

Thanks in advance. (Building out here can be lonely, so every bit of input helps)
