It’s so funny watching old TV shows and wondering why they don’t do something simple to solve a problem, then remembering people have only been able to do that thing relatively recently.
As an example, when someone is supposed to be somewhere but is running late due to some unforeseen issue or emergency. The person who is running late is panicking over how they’re going to let the others know what’s happened. The others are panicking over what could’ve possibly happened to that person that would make them so late. You initially find yourself wondering, “Geez, why don’t they just call them and explain?” But half a second later you remember that people didn’t have cell phones back then, and even if they did, they didn’t have everyone’s number stored in them so they might be at a loss as who to call. They were at the mercy of payphones, if there even was one around.
Another one would be “Oh no, this thing is broken and I don’t have the manual, how ever will I fix it?” and your first automatic thought is wondering why they don’t just Google it.
“She needs medicine but the drugstore is closed! And it’s a long weekend so it won’t be open again for three days!” Dude, seriously, you don’t have a single pharmacy or store near you that’s open on weekends? Oh yeah. I guess you don’t.
In a way it makes me grateful to at least have some advances that make life a bit easier than it was back then.
