AITA for going on vacation with my family even though they treated my fiancée badly?
Me (25M) and Her (25F)
In two months, I’m going on a family vacation to Italy. My fiancée isn’t coming.
I‘m still living at home but I‘m going to move into my own apartment soon.
My family has treated my fiancée badly since day one. They’ve always talked behind her back, even though she’s always been respectful and hasn’t done anything wrong. She’s put up with all of it and remained polite toward my family.
We’re in a long-distance relationship. She‘s from Germany and the plan was for her to move to the U.S. to be with me soon. But my family has been trying to convince me from the start that she’s only with me for a Green Card, which couldn’t be further from the truth. Their opinion has never changed.
Recently, my fiancée wanted to come visit me one more time, but my mom threatened that if she did, she would call ICE and have her deported. That was the breaking point for my fiancée. She told me that my words defending her clearly don’t make a difference and that my family will never stop unless I finally show them there are consequences for their behavior.
She’s been struggling emotionally for months because of all this. I’ve always defended her and told my family their behavior is completely unacceptable.
Now, my fiancée told me that if I still choose to go on vacation with my family, despite everything they’ve done, including threatening to call ICE, she can’t continue our relationship. She said she needs to know that she comes first, especially since she hasn’t done anything wrong.
I don’t want to cancel my family vacation. They’re still my family. I love my fiancée, but I also love my family.
So I’ve decided to go on the trip anyway. That means I’ll probably lose my fiancée.
Am I the asshole for still going on the family vacation despite everything?
