We had to put down our dog- how to deal with not getting another dog for a while

We recently put down our beloved dog that we’ve had for almost 11 years. We are dog people and experienced dog owners but our son is 3, so I know that trying to get a puppy now would be a terrible idea. However, the emptiness of the house is killing me - the idea of not having a dog for years until our son is older makes me super sad. Anyone have any tips for filling this void? My schedule is such that volunteering at a shelter isn’t an option right now. We’re not cat people (and I’m allergic) so cats are out of the question.
