Strata insurance - what does it actually do?

Bought our first place a year or so ago and it’s managed by a strata company.

Our carport has been hit by delivery and taxi drivers at least three times and each time we’ve had to organise all the repairs ourselves. Fortunately the drivers’ insurance has covered it each time but it’s a lot of admin work for us to do.

I’d assumed this would be dealt with by strata insurance but our strata company says it’s private property and thus on us to attend to - is this correct?

We have contents insurance, should we be using this policy to manage this sort of incident?
