Enter the dream progression

So I'm not entirely sure about how enter the dream works. I bought the physical version of the game cause I wanted to play the release story so I'm still playing 1.0, dunno if that'll effect anything other than the story changes or maybe some qol stuff, but do not quests progress every time I enter the dream or only after I do the next step/miss them in a map or will every enter dream force them further and further into their quest even if I've not beat certain bosses or unlocked certain areas.
