Time shown atop notification?

I’ve recently upgraded my watch and set it up clean. Now it’s doing something my previous watches never did, and I’m extremely frustrated by it.

When I get the tone and haptic for a notification, I raise my wrist to look at it. At that point, sometimes the watch blurs the notification and displays the current time. I usually see the notification for less than a second before it gets overlaid with the time.

I assume it’s due to some setting on this watch being different than previous watches, but I can’t figure out which setting to tweak. Has anyone else experienced this and can tell me how to fix it? Please save my fancy new watch from rapid and unscheduled defenestration!
