My sister accused me of making up my coming out story in
Hey everyone, I (F31) recently took part in a Coming Out Day project in my area. Participants shared their stories for a community photo exhibit that’s now on display.
I shared my story about coming out as bisexual. It wasn’t easy — I grew up in a very religious family, and for years I felt like I had to hide who I was. My parents are divorced. I was terrified to tell them both, but I did.
My dad, who used to make harsh comments about LGBTQ+ people, actually surprised me. He said that his children come first and that he loved me no matter what. My mom had a harder time. She thought it was “a phase,” but after a few conversations, she’s become much more accepting.
All of that — the fear, the relief, the gradual acceptance — was part of what I shared for the exhibit. It felt empowering to finally be open about it.
Then, the night of the opening, my younger sister (F20s) sent me a harsh message accusing me of lying. According to her:
- I “never talked to our parents” about my sexuality (which isn’t true).
- I only joined the project “for attention” and “made up a perfect story to fit the theme.”
- I “made Mom look bad” by talking about her initial reaction.
- I “shouldn’t have shared something so personal in public.”
I invited her to talk. She said she doesn’t have a problem with me being bisexual (although it feels like she does), but she thinks I crossed a line by sharing our family’s private stuff publicly.
I told her it wasn’t about her or my Mom — it was my story, my truth. But she didn’t seem to get it.
Now I feel stuck. I love my sister, but I’m really hurt. She’s basically accusing me of lying and disrespecting our family, when all I did was tell my truth. I don’t know if I should keep trying to repair this or take a step back for my own peace of mind.
Has anyone else dealt with a sibling who couldn’t handle you sharing your truth publicly? How did you move forward? I could really use some advice.
