TIL stimulant medications can cause prediabetes

Medication

Hey everyone! I wanted to share something I found out today. I was diagnosed with ADHD back in June and have been trying different stimulants ever since. I always get bloodwork done twice a year as part of my yearly wellness exam and a biometric screening for my job. My biometric screening earlier this year was good. After being on stimulants for almost 4 months, my wellness bloodwork results were prediabetic. My doctor explained that stimulant medications can have a significant effect on blood sugar and insulin resistance. I have always been pretty healthy (though slightly overweight) but never had results like this. They are taking me off stimulants and having me try a non stimulant like Wellbutrin or Strattera. I am sad because while the stimulants weren't 100% effective they did help me in some ways.

I honestly knew of the cardiac risks but wasn't worried about that. I've never heard of the diabetes risk. If you have a family history of diabetes or are overweight be very careful with what you eat and get your bloodwork done!! Prediabetes is luckily reversible so I will be working on that now. Thank you for reading and be careful!
