I almost died after my IUD insertion.
So like the title says, I’m very lucky to be here right now, and I’m very lucky that the nurses stalled me a bit before I drove myself home. (I drove myself to my appointment that day, because I didn’t think it would be a big deal tbh.) When I got my IUD, I was currently on my period and was going through a bad endo flare up. I have stage 2 endo, so I was already in a lot of pain.
After it was inserted, the pain overwhelmed me, and the doctor and nurse stepped out to give me some time to compose myself. The thing is, I tried to sit up, but i immediately fell back and passed out. When I woke up, I felt the cold sweats, but I couldn’t move or open my eyes. It was like I was in a video game, and my energy bar was slowly depleting, and I felt like that was it. I prayed and prayed to God to help me and give me strength, and I eventually mustered up enough strength to get up and change.
I walked out of the room hunched over in pain, and the nurse caught me and told me we had to schedule my follow up. I just wanted to drive home and pass out in my bed, but I thank God she stalled me, because I couldn’t concentrate on setting the appointment. I felt like I was passing out again, and I was hunched over the nurse’s station in pain, and the nurse asked me if I was okay, and I told her I felt I was going to pass out again.
She immediately rushed me into another room, and she called a rapid response over the hospital loudspeaker. I passed out again on the table, and when I woke up, my shirt was off, and like 5 people were in the room checking on me and taking my vitals. A doctor came in once I fully regained consciousness and told me I had a severe vasovagal syncope episode due to the cervical and uterine manipulation.
My blood pressure and heart rate were so low, the monitors couldn’t read them, so they had to take it all manually. My body stiffened and went numb after the second time I passed out, so I couldn’t bend my fingers or legs, so they had to open saltine packages and feed them to me, as well as water and apple juice.
I was at the hospital for an additional hour because of this, as it took a long time for my vitals to actually stabilize. The rapid response team were starting to get worried and asked me to get my heart checked, because my vitals were not stabilizing as fast as they should have.
This whole experience was really traumatizing, and it really pisses me off, because I asked my dr to initially put my under general anesthesia for my IUD, because I felt something like this was going to happen, but he said it’d be overkill. Overkill my ass, because I ended up being there for almost two hours, as they wouldn’t let me leave until I was stabilized. That arguably would’ve been the same amount of time if they would’ve put me under general anesthesia.
