Is there anything else I can do to stop cage chewing?
Hi guys, I recently brought home a male Syrian hamster. I have him in a wooden Pawhut cage with a mix of aspen bedding and paper bedding. The current floor space is over 1,000 sq inches. I have his bedding set up in a slope so one side is very deep while another end is more shallow. I do have the “floors” set up in his cage more so to stabilize his wheel and give it a sturdy space, and to keep his food dish. In addition, his entire cage has chews and toys everywhere and a play sand sand bath. I’ve noticed that he’s already chewing on the cage rather than the ten million chew toys he could use instead (go figure).
Upgrading his cage isn’t necessarily an option due to both space and temporary financial issues. I know he’s chewing on it underneath the bedding somewhere because I can hear it. Is there anything else I could possibly do to help curb his chewing to something more productive that his freaking hamster mansion? Is this a new home sort of deal and part of the adjustment period? I’ve had a few hamsters before (not in this cage), and I haven’t dealt with cage chewing before, especially so early on. I have cats in the home, but they don’t have access to the room with my hamster, Cheesecake, so worst fear is he manages to chew out of the cage and out of the room.
