Trying to add a dark mode toggle and it's way harder than expected

Thought this would be simple - just some CSS variables and a button. But now I'm dealing with localStorage, preventing flash of wrong theme on load, respecting system preferences, and it's become this whole thing. Is there a library that just handles this? Or a tutorial that actually explains the localStorage approach properly? I've tried three different implementations and they all have weird bugs.
