Marston Holdings Confusion - UK

Council Tax

Hi All,

Last week I received a call from Marston Holdings, who at the time I never heard of. Straight away the individual wanted me to confirm my name and address which I didnt want to give. They said it's regarding a debt I owe and wouldn't give anymore info and I would receive a letter.

The next day I receive a text from Marston Holdings for a MailVu portal where the letter was stored. The portal required me to login using my name, address. This kept failing so I rang Marston Holdings to ask what all this was about. The person I spoke to was really nice and explained the debt was for over £1,000 outstanding council tax. It was for an area that I have never lived in and my details didn't match the name/address on the debt. I was told to complete an online form stating that and my details would be removed.

So on the form I gave my full name, address and email address for further communication. Then yesterday I received a reply saying that they will have to send an enforcement officer to confirm my identity.

I feel really uncomfortable with this and I was wondering do I need to legally provide the enforcement officer my ID?

In the reply they also mention: "We are given name and address information by clients, magistrates’ courts, local authorities and the DVLA."

I find this hard to believe as all my details do not match the name on the debt. They can simply check the electoral register to confirm who I am and how long I have lived in this property (over 10 years).

Can someone advise me where I stand legally with this?

Thank you.
