My Grandpa passed, I had a complicated relationship with him
I feel guilty for my avoidance towards him during his last few months.
He was a great Grandfather during my childhood, although as I got into adulthood, our family dynamics fell apart.
He had anger management issues and showed some signs of narcissism. My Mom often experienced the brunt of his anger and she decided to go no-contact with him two years ago.
I tried to preserve my relationship with him the best I could. My dad and sister had also blocked him, but I tried to maintain a relationship with him. However, he would always ask about my Mom and I firmly but nicely would tell him I didn’t want to talk about her. It felt like he would call me to get information on her and since that was a clear breach on her boundaries, I said no
I told him we could talk about anything else. Just don’t bring my mom into it. But he would always find a way to circle back to her. I ended up distancing myself and picking up his calls less and less. I was avoiding telling him why cause I didn’t want to be subject to his anger.
He passed away yesterday. Apparently his short-term memory became an issue during the end of his life. I feel so guilty cause what if he genuinely could not remember why my family stopped talking to him?
