Wars then n now

In ancient times the wars were different. The two protagonists used to arrange infantry and cavalry ,arrange their armies in what that called the battlefield and the war would begin. Nowadays, wars begin unannounced. A country randomly one day drops a bomb on another country and the war begins which is quiet strange When did this shift happen?
