Feeling Discouraged
My fiancé and I have been meeting with a CSAT for a maybe 3 weeks now. I also know that he has only been completely sober for 3 weeks. At our last meeting our therapist basically told us he can’t help us unless he’s been clean for at least 3 months and that he needed to do work with his own personal therapist (also a CSAT) before we could do any actual work. I’m just so discouraged about this and feel stuck. On one hand my partner has been so open and honest and had acknowledged how this addiction hurts not only him but also me and how the things he’s done has deeply affected me and my self confidence. On the other hand there’s no trust built and I’m not sure what I wanted this therapist to do for us but hearing that really discouraged us both. My partner cried and told me he felt like a failure because a therapist told him he couldn’t help me. The therapist told him he had to go all in and completely commit to this process with his therapist. All I can do now is hope that he’s willing to do that and stays clean for those 3 months so we can start working on things. Is this a normal thing for a couples CSAT to request?
