I've had my license for 5 years, but have barely driven.

Asking for advice

I am 28. I started taking driving lessons when I was 22. I was going to lessons twice a week. I've had over 20 lessons. Instructors would tell me I drive well. I passed my road test, but since then I have hardly driven. My Instructor would tell me, "Even when you get your license, you're still learning. It takes about 5 years for a new driver just to become an average driver." I've had refresher lessons since I passed my road test. My other instructor told me, "You're driving is fine, you just need to drive more often."

I waited late to get my driver's license because of anxiety and also because when I would practice with my dad he wasn't very patient and was very critical, nitpicky, and judgmental which only made my anxiety worse. My Dad tends to do this with everything he tries to teach me, not just driving.

This is why I wanted to go to a professional driving school for lessons. I'll admit the instructors I've had were very helpful.

I've been in therapy to try to manage my mental health. I've been diagnosed with General Anxiety, Social Anxiety, ADHD, Avoidant Personality Disorder, Depression, PTSD, etc. I take medication to manage my ADHD.

While I was in driver's training, I wasn't practicing at home outside of lessons which I know is crucial.

My Dad is available. He takes me to work and picks me up everyday. He would be an ideal person for me to practice my driving with, but due to past experience and our relationship I'm reluctant to practice with him. My instructor tried to assure me that she thinks my dad would be proud to see how far I've come. However, she doesn't know my dad.

I really want to get back on the road because I want to get around more. I'll probably be starting nursing school next fall, and I will have to drive 30 minutes to get there.

Any advice?
