How do I grow long hair as a guy?

I've never really had long hair always been from short to mid, I got wavy/ kinda curly hair so anytime I do try it just goes upwards instead so I'm totally unaware of how to maintain long hair plus keep it smooth n silky I wouldn't say my hair is rough but it's not the smoothest thing to touch
