What is the deal with waitresses pushing certain beers?

Often at seafood places or beer restaurants there will be waitresses with the logo of a beer instead of the uniform. They will try to convince me to buy the beer that they are pushing, but otherwise act like normal servers. Are they employed directly by the restaurants? What is their purpose?
