Okarun biggest progress and brave moments were always present when it comes to facing very high-pressure moments through the supernatural, and life or death situations, doing it by protecting himself and his close ones. Is in these heat of the moments that he even got the bravery to pull that half baked and abrupt confession to Momo while the Danmara world was disappearing and there was a lot at stake.

However his normal social life is something different. Sure, after a life of bullying and social anxiety, he now has good friends and is open with them. But have you stopped to wonder how he even got to this point?

Momo always approached him and took him to new adventures

Aira started approaching Momo and Okarun, aswell as getting involved in the supernatural

Jiji got introduced to him through Momo

Kinta literally started to talk to him and get himself in the gang

Vamola first attacked him and then kissed him out of nowhere, then the gang felt the responsability to do something with her

Rin literally started to aproach him because he though he was a vampire

As you can see, Okarun started to have a good circle of friends mostly because everyone came to him through certain circusntances, not because he himself did something to get them. This wouldnt be a problen per se, but goes to show how dependient he can be.

Now Momo is a special case, because you could say he tried to approach her in the first chapter after she stood up for him against his bullies. But the thing is, Momo by that time, was a person she never knew, they werent a thing, so if Momo had a cold reaction to him, he wouldnt have much of a problem in getting over it, because at that point he is pretty much used to being a social outcast.

However after 200 chapters, with all the experiences together, and seeing her as the love of his life, meaning everything to him. Finding out that Momo now has amnesia and has forgot about him, was a huge blow.

He is so in love with Momo and has such a very idealized image of her, that the simple though of getting a cold response like what Aira got in the previous chapter, scares him to death. And understandably so.

So nothing of it is character regression, is in fact the identification and embers of an old flaw of Okaruns core character that he never got to deal with, because as i said, everyone carried him in his social life. But now that he knows Momo is being aware of some things, and the ice has been broken, he can be alliviated and work together with this.

Some people forget that Okaruns social life was always carried by others.
