Well, this subreddit was nice while it lasted. FYI, China is not and never will be punk.

Discussion

TLDR: This sub is now a propaganda front.

I remember finding this subreddit and thinking I had struck gold. Finally, a space where an alternate way of envisioning an optimistic future for all people, where you didn't have to resign yourself to a grey cyber dystopian hell or a bleak anarcho-primitivism. A genuine middle road where we could strike a balance between the benefits of technology and responsibility to ourselves, to each other, the Earth and the other inhabitants of it.

And what happens?

It gets swamped by China. China this, China that.

I have very bad news for you: State sanctioned Chinese renewable projects are not punk in any sense and are overshadowed by China's continued carbon emissions now overshadowing every member state of the European Union combined.

Initially, I thought this was the kind of understandable surface level analysis of China that could be forgiven. Until I read the comments.

Whataboutism. Left and right. The tell tale tactics of authoritarian regimes like China, Russia and frankly, even the US. "Western propaganda" they cry at any criticism, deflecting any insinuation that the nation state in question maybe shouldn't be put on a pedestal. Whether bots or actual Chinese propagandist accounts, it's evident now that this sub is another propaganda front for the CCP. I expect the comments to reflect everything I've said if this post doesn't get deleted.

I support any and all efforts of the Chinese PEOPLE to create a sustainable and equitable future. But not the People's Republic of China, which is an authoritarian regime that has and continued to inflict atrocities on those within it's reach(Uyghur genocide denial in the comments, perhaps?).

Well, thanks for the cool ideas r/solarpunk. But I guess I'm back to being ideologically homeless.
