baby’s grandma told me I need to let my baby cry at night and to “put earplugs on”

I told my mil that my 8 month old often wakes up several times at night, she said that this is ridiculous and I should stop going to check on him at all at night. “this is what I did, this is what we all did” and went on about how baby just needs to cry it out.

Now, I did read books on this and although the research shows that sleep training is beneficial (in the sense that baby will sleep through the night) the cry-it-out method just doesn’t make sense for my family. Me and my husband can’t stand to her our son crying and we want to and will reassure him.

Mil then told me to “read my book” and that baby will be fine, and I said I just don’t like to hear him cry and that in my opinion babies cry for a reason. She said “when then just put earplugs on”. I thought that to be a crazy thing to do and just such a cold way of dealing with a little baby.

She also keeps insisting on butter, she think I should give baby some butter before bed so his stomach is full of fat. I did let her give him butter once when we saw her for dinner and baby kept waking up that night and throwing up so it clearly upset his stomach. I told her that and she keeps saying we just need to give him less.

It’s not like I keeps sharing things with her, she just… says stuff? I know I don’t have to listen to her and I won’t because it’s ridiculous but it was such a hard “advice” to listen to 😩
