Demographic survey: are the people of r/Vietnam more conservative or liberal?
Disclaimer: This will not accurately reflect the views of common Vietnamese people. Reddit is very obscure among mainstream Vietnamese spaces.
For those unfamiliar with the terms:
Conservatives are people who promote and believe in traditional institutions, customs, and values. For example:
- Family and gender roles (men should be breadwinners while women take care of the house, getting married and having children is an obligation towards your family lineage).
- Confucianism (filial piety, respecting your elders and maintaining family harmony).
- Religious views (usually Buddhist/sometimes Catholic).
- Nationalism (deep respect for the Party, pride in Vietnam's history, deep emphasis on maintaining national unity and identity).
- Opposition towards minorities (ethnic groups, foreign immigrants, LGBTQ+).
Liberals are people who promote and believe in freedom, individual rights, and social equality. For example:
- Gender equality and feminism (women are just as capable as men, women should be treated with as much respect as men, starting a family is a choice and not an obligation).
- Individualism (people should be free to express themselves however they want and make their own choices regarding their careers, relationships, and lifestyle, even if it goes against societal norms).
- Political reform (increased political freedoms and democratic reforms, press freedom, and freedom of speech).
- Support towards minorites
