(Transfer Target) Onni Valakari — Why We Should Move Early

Been tracking Onni Valakari (Age 26 - Paphos, on loan at San Diego FC), son of St Johnstone Manager Simo Valakari, and he’s exactly the kind of midfield profile we need. With his strong duel success, progressive passing, and aerial presence, he’d give us that extra bit of quality we need right now.

Why He Fits Celtic

  • Left-footed RM/CM/AM, 26 y/o, Finland international
  • 0.23 assists per 90 — higher than McCowan
  • 5.1 progressive passes per 90 with 84.2% pass accuracy
  • Wins 6.2 duels per 90 at 57.1% — adds bite in midfield
  • 2.9 aerial duels won per 90 — physical presence we lack in some away fixture

Compared to McCowan

  • McCowan’s more of a wide dribbler — Valakari gives us central control, better defensive metrics, and more creative balance
  • Valakari’s xA, recoveries, and long ball accuracy are all stronger — especially useful in Europe or matches where we need midfield steel

Valakari settling in shouldn't be an issue as his Dad's in Scotland along with his brother who is part of the St Johnstone coaching staff. If San Diego don’t take up the option to buy and he returns to Paphos, we should move fast — either loan him in January 2026 or loan/buy outright in summer 2026. He’s a smart fit and won’t stay available for long.
