Mentorship and/or Counselling for Teenage Girl

Ask Winnipeg

Using a throw away for obvious reasons.

I need some help coming up with resources to help my daughter (17 in grade 12).  She’s having issues with anxiety, anger, relationships with family and friends, and body image.

My wife and I try to offer her advice, but as with a lot of teenagers, she doesn’t pay much heed to advice coming from her parents.  We’ve set her up with counselling through my EAP, but due to recent changes at work, the counselling is only offered through teleconference, and usually at times that are difficult for her.

I'm thinking that rather than counselling, what she really needs is a mentor.  I’m thinking she needs an adult with some life experience that can guide her and that she can confide in that isn’t her parents.  Failing that, if there’s local counselling available that isn’t overly expensive, and specializes in teens would also be an option.

I’m thinking there must be some parents out there who’ve gone through similar issues that could offer advice or identify resources.  I’d love to hear from you.  Thanks in advance for any and all replies.
