Looking for career advice as an employed web developer.

Hello,

I’ve been at my company for about two years now. I was hired initially as a website administrator. This consisted of handling DNS records, occasionally working on designs, solving technical issues or bringing solutions to client requests, and using standard HTML, CSS, JavaScript to customize templates that we make in house.

I did this role for a year, and I had one manager who was my lead. Also an administrator. Although I respect him and he brings value to the company, I haven’t had to rely on him for much since being hired. We have different personality types and ambitions, which is fine.

At the year mark, I was promoted due to my performance. I was added to the design team, while also still having to handle my old duties. I did receive a small raise. So at this point I had to managers, the old administrator, and the design director.

For the past year I’ve performed exceptionally and clients are happy with my designs and the state of our websites is in much better shape than how things were before I was hired. The design director was phenomenal, I learned a lot from him. He taught me illustrator, gave me tips for photoshop and other software, and I really got a fulfillment from the products I was designing and my work life.

The bad:

A few months ago we had massive layoffs and were restructuring. A lot of our services are being discontinued. The fired the entire design team. The design director is no longer my main manager, and he’s moved to a different part of the company which is the main branch.

After my meeting with another director on Monday, it’s looking like my new manager will be the old web administrator manager I had. I’ve essentially taken over his core responsibilities since I’ve started. On top of handling ALL the design work for our clients. I’ve achieved a lot since I started and I feel like I’m back at square one. I feel being under my web admin manager will inhibit my room for professional growth and skill growth.

I’m typing this out on my phone so I hope this makes sense. But I’m looking for general advice on how to communicate my feels with the director. Restructuring is happening soon and it’s a healthy environment where communication is encouraged. I just don’t want to throw anyone under the bus accidentally. Thank you.
