In Posession / Out of Possession Roles vs Positions

Discussion

I’m a bit confused about roles like Box-to-Box Midfielder and Inverted Wingback, since their in-game descriptions in the new UI already mention that they push up to AMC and CM areas respectively.

How does this differ from just playing these players out of position (for example, using a DM/CM or a right/left back) and then manually instructing them to move into AMC or CM roles in possession?

I get that players have positional competencies, so not everyone can perform well both at CM and LB, for instance. In that case, if I want my LB to cut inside and operate as a DM/CM in possession, I’d use the Inverted Wingback role. But doesn’t it essentially boil down to the same underlying logic?
