Life as an engineer PhD student?

I'm applying to NC State's materials science and engineering PhD program and was wondering how life is like as a grad student at ncsu. It is my top choice if I get in. How's the stipend? Are you able to live off of it? How's Raleigh? Is the grad community supportive? Is there a lot of campus events for grad students to get involved in?
