A senior Dalit leader of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Tatik Narayana Rao, was arrested by Andhra Pradesh police for allegedly attempting sexual assault on a 13-year-old schoolgirl, pretending to be her grandfather and persuading her to leave the school premises.

According to Kakinada DSP Srihari Raju, Rao took the girl to a mango orchard on the outskirts of Tuni, where he allegedly tried to molest her.

The act came to light when the orchard owner, noticing suspicious behavior, recorded a video of the accused. On realising this, Rao fled the scene on his scooter with the girl. Following a complaint from the victim’s relatives, police tracked down and arrested him.

DSP Srihari Raju stated that a case has been registered under stringent provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. “Since the accused took a minor away from school premises, it qualifies as kidnapping. Severe sections, including those relating to rape, have been added,” he said.

The DSP added that the investigation was being expedited and that the accused would be produced before court at the earliest.

Meanwhile, protests broke out outside the Gurukula school, with local residents and the girl’s family demanding strict action. Police are also questioning the school principal for alleged negligence in allowing the student to leave the hostel without permission.

Srihari Raju cautioned against politicising the case, clarifying that no political party had confirmed any association with the accused. He also warned that sharing videos or images of the minor victim was a punishable offence under the Pocso Act, urging media outlets and the public to refrain from such actions.

The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) student wing condemned the incident on social media, calling Rao a "vile elderly predator" and highlighting women's safety in Andhra Pradesh as a serious issue under the TDP rule. They demanded immediate justice for the victim.
