How am I supposed to be smart and extremely competent in this extremely competitive field when I feel lonely almost every day and barely sleep?
I work in tech. It is extremely competitive right now, plus it is extremely painful to work in too with recent layoffs seasons. I'm supposed to be extremely competent and constantly learn; otherwise, I'm going to be just burrowing under the rocks, doing some mediocre job at a mediocre company forever.
But most nights I can't sleep due to severe anxiety. I wake up early with a sweaty bed. I don't have friends who can understand me. I try to keep myself busy with the content I have learned, but that doesn't give me emotional support. Probably the reason for this is I don't feel "home" anywhere, not even with my parents. I crave being surrounded by people who understand me.
They say you shouldn't compare your life with others, but I feel like it's impossible for me not to. I see my friends doing exactly those jobs which I consider mediocre. They go to the office, rant about their bosses when they meet me, they always tell me how they hate their jobs and how they want to proceed further for a better one... but I can see their stability which they assume I have too. They struggle in the office, but when they leave work, they go home! to their families, to their spouses, to their babies, to their pets! They rant every weekday but enjoy with their friends on weekends. They drink, laugh, share stories together.
I feel like I'm missing out a lot in life. I'm about to turn 28 with no direction, no partner, no friends. I'm supposed to be smart, but what am I to do with this smart brain if I can't be happy?
