VENT: I am FURIOUS about the factors I need to consider when writing political songs
Writing political/protest music is inherently very difficult. That's not the complaint. That's not why I'm furious.
The complaint is that now, in addition to trying to write a political/protest song that is meaningful and isn't cliche, I have to worry about whether it will put me on a fucking list.
I have to think about whether I really want to release it ... and if I need to release it under a NEW pseudonym, because my current performer name can be traced back to my real name... and whether I need to get a privacy focused email and vpn to create said new youtube or soundcloud... because in the unlikely event it goes viral, I might be Doxxed or fired, or get a visit from the FBI.
More than that, I need to think REALLY, REALLY hard about who I collaborate with for the music and production, even if they are on the same page politically, I don't want to accidentally put THEM on a list. Because even if they don't start going door-to-door to round up dissenters, it could still make it harder for them to visit the US under a visa (if they are foreign) or bring a fiance or family member to the states.
The fact that these things are even a CONSIDERATION when writing music is absolutely ABSURD and infuriating. Mods can remove if this isn't appropriate, but I'm just f*cking furious right now.
