How to recover from cheating
Hey y'all I'm looking for some genuine opinions. My long-term boyfriend of 7 years confessed to me that he'd cheated on me for about 9 months. I was obviously heartbroken and still am in many ways. Now I know there is no way for me to explain every nuance of our relationship, but I'm going to try to share what I think is important. Sorry ahead of time for the length.
We are currently still together because I believe that he genuinely feels terrible about it. Not just sorry that he got caught, but sorry for his betrayal, broken trust, and hurt he caused. Now I definitely haven't forgiven him, but even after all of this, I still can't imagine my life without him. When I used to picture our life together, it was this crystal dream and I could see us growing old together clearly. Now when I picture it, I can still see that, it's just murky and foggier.
He has willingly and actively joined couples therapy and I honestly feel like we are in the process of mending a huge wound.
Now the reason he cheated is not fun to admit, but of all the things I question or don't trust, I know he's telling the truth. I've had a horrible hormone imbalance and my sex drive basically plummeted to the 100th circle of hell. We hadn't had sex in many, many, many months. He was very patient with me for a very long time. When he would ask to have sex, he told me that I made him feel like a burden and unwanted with the way i would turn him down. And the horribly sad thing is, is that I know that I did. Looking back, I was not kind or appreciative of his patience. I barely made an effort to correct my hormones. I knew it at the time and the only thing that kept me on that path despite it, was honestly my ego. I never thought he would cheat on me and would brag to my friends that he was down so bad. I don't want to say that him cheating is my fault - he made the ultimate choices to do so - but I can see and fully understand that my actions led him there.
In the meantime since his confession, we've had incredibly deep conversations about what we want, what wasn't working, and how we both would honestly just bottle up negative feelings so we wouldn't cause any problems. We had never really fought or argued before this to give y'all context to how much we both avoided the confrontation.
Despite the trust and the earth shattering pain, I have never felt closer to him. We have both shared things with each other that we hadn't before. And it hasn't been just those one off times of trying to do better. It's genuinely been months of both of us working on ourselves and our relationship.
What would y'all do in this situation? Would you find yourself in my shoes staying? Would you have left immediately no looking back? Before being cheated on, I would've said "girl leave his ass", but now that I'm in it, I see how complicated relationships are.
