Fork in the road, what to choose?
I’m 29 and currently working in Europe at a big US tech company, in a data-heavy role. I’ve been here for about 10 months, working roughly 90 hours a week on average (pretty much 12-hour days). It’s intense but I’ve learned a lot — strong analytics, business impact, and global-scale exposure.
Now I’ve been offered a regional product management role in Dubai at another global company (top 20 brand). The pay difference is huge: around €5.5k/month (plus 800€ monthly in stock that will vest in 4y) after tax in Europe vs €8.7k/month tax-free in Dubai, plus two bonuses a year worth about €16k each. So in total, 11.5k€ month net vs 6.3k€. Expenses shouldn’t go up too much, perhaps less than a k€ per month.
On paper, Dubai sounds like a financial and lifestyle upgrade. It’s a leadership-oriented role with more ownership and visibility, but less technical depth. Staying here would mean slower financial growth but continued development in data and tech, and probably better work-life balance in the long run.
I’m torn between continuing to build my technical foundation in a structured environment or taking a leap into a fast-paced market role where I could learn a ton, save more, but probably burn faster too.
If you were in your late 20s, which would you prioritize right now — depth and long-term skill-building, or acceleration and international exposure?
