About the Returner's Clockwork Watch.

Recently, I've been thinking a lot about the trauma penalty. Obviously, it's a big deal, especially in the later chapters of the novel.
My question is why is Yoo Soo-Ha (Flame Emperor) such a cunt, if he probably had to die hundreds of times, and therefore watch tons of traumas. Is he really such an irredeemable monster?
