A month ago I posted about a mc/khorn score. Well here’s an uodate…

Mc stuff mostly worked fine. Amp and pre were solid, tuner worked but drifts as it warms up.

The Khorns sat until this rainy weekend. I was confident they’d be fine. Wrong…. Hooked up, and only tweeters and mids worked.

Chased wiring, then removed the woofers. They were original square magnets, super clean, almost perfect looking cones, shiny black goo… these must have been reconed.

They tested great at 8.5+- ohms, no running at all. Only issue was they sounded like a gravel bowl.

Well, next step was to cut the domes and inspect. Holey chit!! The voice coils looked like they were crumpled up and smashed into the hole. They were obviously not aligned, and it’s amazing there was actually sound emanating from this mess.

It was surprising how beautiful the outside job was, and how hacked the most important VC part was. Unless they were blown out by the 200 watt amp?

I considered experimenting with some jbl e140’s I’ve got, but research says the slot needs to be widened, and they end up overpowering the highs/mids without crossover modification.

I’ve already got another 1969 pair hooked up to a 25 watt tube amp, and the original cheesy pressed steel frames and 2” voice coils work fine.

My quick solution is buying the $200/pr parts express k-33 replacements, and just getting them back in running order.

(Altec horns just for show!)
