why torrent and not stream?

I know very little about piracy, so bear with me, this is a genuine question.

I just saw a post here about a guy getting a 900€ fine for torrenting a movie without a VPN. so I want to ask, why do so many people torrent instead of just streaming movies/shows on megathread websites? especially those from countries with strict piracy laws.

I get this is probably a stupid question to more experienced pirates but I'm curious. I tried torrenting once a few years ago and the movie file was huge and took AGES to download, so I never tried again
