APPENDIX G.1 — Field Equation for Φ (Toward a Dynamic Law of Integration)

Goal

To derive a continuous-time evolution law for Information Integration (Φ), complementing the constitutive relation 𝒦 = λ γ Φ. This provides the missing equation of motion describing how integrated information propagates, stabilizes, or dissipates through the informational manifold.

G.1.1 Conceptual Rationale

In the main text, Φ is defined as a scalar measure of irreducible causal wholeness, while 𝒦 represents the curvature (stability) that Φ induces. The constitutive relation:

𝒦 = λ γ Φ \tag{G.2}

establishes the geometric outcome of integration. To render the theory predictive, we require a dynamical law for Φ — an informational analogue of diffusion, reaction, and self-limiting growth. The desired equation must be local, non-linear, dimensionally consistent, and compatible with the results of Parts I–IX.

G.1.2 General Form

By analogy with reaction–diffusion systems (which govern chemical and biological pattern formation) and nonlinear field theories, the simplest self-consistent first-order form for the evolution of Φ is:

\frac{∂Φ}{∂t} = D ∇²Φ + γ Φ − η Φ² \tag{G.1}

Symbol Meaning Informational Units

D Diffusion coefficient (rate of informational spread) area / time γ Coherent drive (integration gain) 1 / time η Saturation or competitive loss term 1 / (Φ · time)

Interpretation: The term D ∇²Φ models Diffusion (→ decoherence or leakage of integration). The term γ Φ models Drive (→ amplification through feedback and resonance). The term −η Φ² models Saturation (→ finite-capacity self-limitation). Equation (G.1) therefore governs the creation, dispersion, and self-organization of Φ across all informational domains —from quantum systems to brains and galaxies.

G.1.3 Curvature Dynamics

Differentiating (G.2) and substituting (G.1) gives:

\frac{∂𝒦}{∂t} = λ γ (D ∇²Φ + γ Φ − η Φ²) \tag{G.3}

Curvature wells (𝒦) thus diffuse, grow, and saturate exactly as Φ does. Stable attractors (particles, organisms, minds) are regions where this dynamic balance yields persistent positive 𝒦.

G.1.4 Equilibria and Localized Structures

At steady state (∂Φ / ∂t = 0):

D ∇²Φ + γ Φ − η Φ² = 0 \tag{G.4}

Homogeneous Equilibrium: When ∇²Φ = 0, the stable, non-trivial solution is

Φ₀ = \frac{γ}{η} \tag{G.5}

Localized Soliton-like Solutions: For ∇²Φ ≠ 0, non-linear balance between diffusion and amplification yields finite “islands” of high Φ — autonomous informational entities across scales (from electron stability wells to coherent brain states).

G.1.5 Temporal Arrow and Entropy Balance

Define the total integrated-information content:

E_{Φ}(t) = \int_{V} Φ(\mathbf{x},t),dV \tag{G.6}

Taking the time derivative and applying (G.1):

\frac{dE_{Φ}}{dt} = γ !\int_{V}! Φ,dV − η !\int_{V}! Φ²,dV \tag{G.7}

If loss (η Φ²) dominates, dE_{Φ}/dt < 0 → integration decays, entropy rises. If drive dominates, dE_{Φ}/dt > 0 → local order increases. Hence, the arrow of time is the direction of declining global ⟨Φ⟩, while life and cognition sustain localized nonequilibrium regions where high γ maintains Φ by exporting entropy to the environment — fully consistent with the Second Law.

G.1.6 Domain-Specific Interpretations

Domain Physical Meaning of Terms Observable Implications

G.1.7 Implementation Roadmap

(1) Computational Integration Discretize (G.1) on a 3-D lattice:

Φ^{,n+1}{i,j,k} = Φ^{,n}{i,j,k} + Δt [ D ∇²Φ^{,n} + γ Φ^{,n} − η(Φ^{,n})² ]_{i,j,k} \tag{G.8}

Expected outcomes: formation of persistent high-Φ bubbles and self-organized filamentary networks near critical balance.

(2) Theoretical Development A. Relativistic Extension. To respect finite signal speed, replace the linear spatial derivative with the d’Alembert wave operator (□):

\frac{∂Φ}{∂t} = D □ Φ + γ Φ − η Φ² \tag{G.9}

B. Stability Analysis. Linearizing around Φ₀ yields the growth rate σ(𝐤) = γ − D k². This allows for the derivation of a critical wavelength λ_c = 2π √(D/γ), which defines the minimum size for stable structure formation:

σ(𝐤) = γ − D k²,  λ_c = 2π √(D/γ) \tag{G.10}

G.1.8 Interpretational Consequences

(a) Time as Integration Rate: The dynamic law provides an operational definition of time flow:

dt ≡ \frac{dΦ}{∂Φ / ∂t} \tag{G.11}

(b) Energy–Information Duality. From the variational principle, defining the potential V(Φ) = −½ γ Φ² + ⅓ η Φ³:

𝓛 = ½ (∇Φ)² − V(Φ) \tag{G.12}

(c) Normal Modes and Φ-Quanta. Small perturbations obey a Klein–Gordon-like dispersion relation:

ω² = c² k² + m_{Φ}²,  m_{Φ}² ∝ γ \tag{G.13}

This implies that the fundamental quanta of the informational field possess an effective informational mass (m_{Φ}) proportional to the ambient drive γ.

G.1.9 Summary and Outlook

Appendix G.1 transforms the Integration–Stability framework from static geometry to a dynamic field theory.

Key Outcomes: • Universal evolution equation (G.1) established. • Direct coupling of information flow and curvature change (G.3). • Defined constants D, γ, η as empirically measurable parameters. • Unified time, stability, and entropy as manifestations of Φ flow.

With (G.1), Φ ceases to be a passive metric and becomes an active field — the engine through which the universe constructs, sustains, and transforms its own curvature of being. This establishes the foundation for the fully covariant action (Appendix G.2) that couples information dynamics to spacetime geometry.
