Sometimes, people lie to themselves and present themselves as more righteous than they are. Instead of facing the Truth and trying to return to HaShem, they justify their behaviors with excuses and pretend to be innocent. However, the stamp of HaShem is Emes; no one can be a hypocrite in Shamayim, and judgment eventually will come.

The current Parashah, Vayeira, presents a dramatic and troubling episode involving Avraham Avinu and Sarah Imeinu. The narrative begins as they journey southward to the land of Gerar, setting the stage for an unexpected crisis. Soon after their arrival, the powerful King Avimelech abducts Sarah, intending to take her as his wife.

Yet, a divine intervention prevents this terrible act. Hashem appears to Avimelech in a dream, delivering a terrifying message: He will be executed for his intentions. Avimelech, startled and desperate, pleads for his life and the lives of his nation, claiming innocence. He highlights a crucial detail: both Avraham and Sarah themselves claimed they were brother and sister. How could he have known the truth? He insists that he acted with integrity and a pure heart, believing the couple's statement. This defense raises profound theological questions about justice and deception.

However, Hashem’s response to Avimelech introduces a deeper level of understanding. Hashem reveals that Avraham was a navi, a prophet, capable of discerning concealed truths. The conversation pivots to the unusual behavior of Avimelech's people. Rabbi Lev Leib Lerner explains that when a visitor arrives in a city, the community should offer basic hospitality: a place to stay, a drink, or food. But the people of Gerar asked a highly inappropriate question: Is the woman accompanying you your sister or your wife? This perverted curiosity immediately signaled to Avraham that he was among an immoral nation.

Avraham Avinu understood that if they discovered Sarah’s true identity as his beautiful wife, they would kill him simply to take her. This forced his hand, compelling him and Sarah to claim they were siblings. Therefore, Avimelech cannot truly claim he was tricked. His own culture's immorality and the perverted questions of his people led Avraham to the necessary conclusion that he must protect his family through this strategic deception.
