Another Muslim boyfriend broke up with me post
Not a rant but wanted to get this off my chest to help relieve the pain since I don’t really have anyone else to talk/or could understand.
And also I apologize for this post, I know it may seem redundant and there’s many similar experiences in this subreddit BUT I’d feel like it would help me make peace or just accept what’s happened. And thank you to anyone who gives their thoughts or advice in advance! I appreciate it.
I (23F catholic, but not really religious) and my (23M muslim/Palestinian) boyfriend broke up the other day. It’s been tough, we dated for 8 months and it was genuinely amazing! Before he met me he used to hook up with girls and have short flings etc and didn’t believe he would get married or even have a relationship in general (he’s also pre med) until we met each other. We had great conversations and our moral values really aligned and we just clicked. He didn’t push religion or really spoke about it, neither of us did. It was all amazing until the 5 month mark when he told me his parents didn’t like me. I have never met them besides his younger brother who I thought was chill (he did the same, smoke weed, drank, more chill than my boyfriend tbh) and I started spiraling. I never had a parent disapprove of me or said vile things about me and he would tell me because i would ask (I know I shouldn’t have but I was in disbelief at the time). That was when our relationship started getting rocky.
Not between us, we still love and care deeply about eachother but the external factors.
He was anxious about his future, school was getting tough and the constant nagging of his parents to leave me caught up to him.
I was his emotional comfort, and I strived for him to be a better man each day and tried to redirect his feelings and be supportive. I wont lie.. it was draining at times because I catered to him emotionally, I gave solutions but he never took my advice. He’s stubborn but very driven in everything he does in this life.
I feel like he didn’t want his parents to disown him because of me. He also financially relied on his parents and will be until he’s 30. I felt upset he couldn’t make his own decisions and follow his heart because I know he still wants to be with me but the external factors like school, the culture and his parents made him choose the logical choice to break up.
Which I understand. I really understand because I can see both sides and I’m grateful I can be able to do that. I was patient and still supportive because I know it’s hard even thought I’m hurting. I just wish 2 people who love and are devoted to each other could still be together.
I’ve learned acceptance, and that I believe he really lost a good woman. But it still hurts when someone who left you… and hurt you… you still want to be comforted by them.
I even tried learning about Islam and I feel weird saying this.. praying to Allah and God (in some beliefs rooted in me being catholic) to accept our relationship in some way. “If it’s meant to be, by your will, they will come” phrases similar to that. And I usually don’t pray.
Idk, just have been feeling really down. I thought he was the one. And yes I’ve been in a relationship before but this one hits so heavy because I never knew I could care and love so deeply for someone rather than my own you know .
I know he’s grieving in his own way, and the breakup was mature. I don’t resent him at all because he is a good person and we understand each other but I’m just sad that one day he’ll end up marrying someone he doesn’t love or just someone his parents approve of.
