Can I use a controller to bypass psycho mantis fight in metal gear solid ps1?

I'm playing metal gear solid 1 and I'm wondering if I can connect a controller to bypass this fight? if I can, how do I do it?

I haven't reached the fight yet and I want to be prepared.
