How to Record Your Screen (and Webcam) on Mac
Hey There!
Today, I would like to share a quick breakdown on how to record video on your Mac, depending on what you need to do!
Built-in Tools (No downloads needed)
- QuickTime Player Great for basic screen recording. Open QuickTime → File → New Screen Recording. You can choose to record the entire screen or a portion, with or without mic audio. Also supports webcam recording (New Movie Recording).
- macOS Screenshot Toolbar (Cmd + Shift + 5) If you're on macOS Mojave or later, this brings up screen recording options. Lets you record the whole screen or a selected portion. Quick and easy, but limited features.
Third-party Apps (More features)
If you need more control (e.g., editing, annotations, overlays), here are some popular options:
- CleanShot X – Great for clean UI and productivity-focused features. Ideal for screen capture + annotation.
- Capto – Good for educational content; lets you edit and manage recordings easily.
- ScreenFlow – Powerful for professional-level editing and tutorials.
- OBS Studio – Open-source, great for streaming and advanced screen recording.
- Movavi Screen Recorder – Beginner-friendly and lightweight.
Want to record webcam + screen at the same time?
- Use QuickTime for one (e.g., screen) and another app (like Photo Booth or a third-party tool) for webcam.
- Or go with OBS, ScreenFlow, or Capto, which support both natively.
TL;DR:
- For basic needs: QuickTime or Cmd+Shift+5.
- For better features: Check out CleanShot X, ScreenFlow, or OBS.
- For recording yourself + screen: Use tools that support multi-source input.
