I'm looking for a book (I'll tell you in advance that I don't know English, so I'm using a translator)
I’m trying to find a book I read in Russian translation a few years ago.
The title in Russian was “Очевидец” (which means “The Witness” or “Eyewitness”), but I’m not sure if that was the original name.
The cover was glossy black and had a police car or police lights on it. The book was medium length (around 100–200 pages).
Plot summary: A man who works as a kind of private investigator / hired fixer is investigating a case for a wealthy man whose wife and daughter have been kidnapped. Later, the daughter is found dead. The supposed kidnappers demand ransom, but there’s a twist — the investigator finds a photo from an ATM showing the wife withdrawing money from the ransom funds. It turns out she may have staged the kidnapping. Then someone shoots the rich man dead, and the protagonist becomes the only person who knows the truth. He has to run away, change his name, and flee to another country. The police start suspecting him too.
Some parts of the story take place in Monterrey, Mexico, and there’s a romance subplot where he meets a young woman from a religious family.
It was definitely a fictional story, not documentary, possibly written by a foreign author, translated into Russian sometime before 2022.
If anyone recognizes this book or its cover, please let me know!
Thanks in advance 🙏 (The text was compiled by GPT chat. If you have any questions, I can answer them, but I don’t remember a lot of it.)
