LEAP market info, etc
Please share! Just a friendly reminder in light of Snap benefits likely being stopped altogether and/or lowered next month-and the federal employees who are without pay right now— ANYONE with Snap benefits can get double their benefit amount at your local farm share and farmers markets. We have one here in Roanoke (LEAP) but they exist all over the country. Basically if you have $30 in food stamps, you can get $60 in local produce.
A list of your local farm share location can be found here: https://www.localharvest.org/
In addition to this, they have twice weekly farmers markets all across Roanoke, and any child under 18 automatically gets $5 to spend on produce for free! Most local farmer’s markets set up through mutual aid organizations offer this! They also have seasonal farm shares- where you pick up a weekly assortment of produce, bread, eggs, pantry items. We do this and don’t receive food stamps. It’s an awesome way to support local farmers and receive organic, local produce at 1/3 of the cost of the grocery store. Leap is taking winter share orders now, so you have time to get on that list if you’re in Roanoke. For $500 you will receive 5-7 veggies, fruit, bread, and a pantry item through the entire winter season (this works out to about $30 a week! That amount is reduced by half if you receive food stamps. https://www.leapforlocalfood.org
If you are a federal employee, lose your food stamps, or are just struggling to feed your family- dm me! I can keep you supplied with fresh eggs at no charge. It may not be much, but I’m happy to help in whatever small way I can! Lastly, you can find your local food pantry at www.gethelp.org If you are someone who is able to contribute to your community as we navigate these uncertain times, please add whatever items you are able to help with to the comments, as well as sharing this post and add your contributions to it! If we can get a list going for Roanoke community members to have on hand when things get tough, everyone will be better off this winter!
