Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced “powerful strikes on the Gaza Strip immediately,” signaling a potential breakdown of the truce brokered under Donald Trump’s diplomacy.

The United States had been striving to stabilize the cease-fire by dispatching senior officials to Israel and setting up an American coordination centre.

Tensions erupted after disputes over the return of hostages’ bodies: Israel accuses Hamas of stalling the hand-over of remains of 13 hostages, including two Americans. Trump warned of action by other countries involved in the “GREAT PEACE” if Hamas did not comply.

Hamas did hand over the remains of one hostage, but Israel disputes that the delivery fulfilled the deal, claiming it consisted only of fragments of a previously-recovered body. Israel then released drone footage it said showed Hamas staging a return.

The White House and CIA were sent the video; while Israeli officials argued it reached the threshold for renewed military action, U.S. officials down-played the breach and urged Israel not to act.

Netanyahu convened an emergency meeting with the IDF to explore retaliation options—ranging from renewed air-strikes to expanding occupation zones—though no decision was made and Israel emphasised coordination with the U.S.

Later on Tuesday Hamas announced it had discovered another hostage’s body in Khan Younis and planned to hand it over. Simultaneously militants engaged Israeli forces in Rafah, prompting retaliatory air-strikes by the IDF.
